At the end of the 19th century, Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild commissioned a local firm of architects to create a dairy to house his prize-winning herd of cattle. The design was influenced by Marie Antoinette’s farm at Versailles.

In 1989 Lord Rothschild initiated an extensive restoration programme to transform the Dairy into a stylish venue for weddings. The project also included the restoration of The Dairy’s Victorian water gardens which were created by James Pulham in the 1880s.
